An extraordinary book about the award that shaped the history of Italian design.

Compasso d’Oro. ADI Design Museum – Historical Collection, edited by Beppe Finessi, with graphic design by Leonardo Sonnoli and published by Treccani, has been produced by Fondazione ADI Collezione Compasso d’Oro in collaboration with ADI – Associazione per il Disegno Industriale e ADI Design Museum.

Presented in Milan on 7 May, the book offers a comprehensive journey through seventy years of award-winning Italian design. Across 1,040 pages and 2,275 images, including sketches, projects and archival photographs, and more than 50 critical essays, the volume provides an overview of the design culture that has defined Italian excellence. Structured in three sections, it includes a complete Albo d’Oro of all Compasso d’Oro winners from 1954 to 2022, along with an unpublished timeline.

Among the featured projects is Sheraton, designed in 1977 by Lodovico Acerbis and Giotto Stoppino and awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1979. A sideboard that blends formal rigour with technical innovation: unusually wide doors, enabled by a slide-and-rotate mechanism, open completely, while the top, offset from the base, enhances its architectural presence and functional character. A design that still retains its expressive strength, decades after its debut.
