Entrepreneur, designer, creative and writer. Lodovico Acerbis was born in Bergamo in 1939. After graduating in Economics and Commerce, he joined the company founded by his father in 1963, transforming it from a carpenter’s workshop into an industrial reality, which he managed until 2013. His vision, to create furniture by applying the most advanced technologies, using the finest materials and collaborating with the most innovative designers, has brought the company to a leading position in the furniture sector. A mission that lives on today with MDF Italia.

As Marco Romanelli wrote in 2005 in Abitare, his distinctive feature was his ability to play the role of entrepreneur and designer together, in a permeability of roles that he knew how to keep distinct and balanced. “He could be defined as a designer who produces or a producer who designs” (Abitare n.455, 2005).
Some of his most significant creations on the Italian design scene have won numerous international awards.

Acerbis presents the entire Remasters collection live for the first time, with an installation curated by Meda and Lopez Quincoces and in collaboration with Spotti Milano. The collection, which features seven archival masterpieces by the great masters of design, embraces the brand’s visionary heritage, reimagined today with new proportions, new colours, and new materials.

The occasion sees the debut of the new graphic identity of Acerbis conceived in partnership with Studio Temp. Recalling the vigorously pragmatic visual identity of 1970s-era Acerbis, the update of the brand’s potent graphic heritage parallels the retooling of its archive furnishing creations.
In perfect harmony with the “Remasters” philosophy, research into the brand’s historical archives led to the development of the new identity, translating the imagery of the past into a contemporary language.

The Spotti Milano exhibition will open with the launch of the Florian folding side table, originally created by Vico Magistretti in 1989 —one of the new 2021 designs remastered from the Acerbis archives. Ingeniously functional, the Florian represents Magistretti’s supreme simplicity, with a lightweight, multi-level table built on a foldable structure, which collapses flat to hang on the wall as a graphic object of circles and lines.
In Meda and Lopez Quincoces’s version, the Florian’s size adapts to modern living, its ash wood frame folds smoothly and quickly with a modern brass mechanism, and its graphic impact is bolstered with lacquered tones of mustard, green spruce, and brick.

Until 12th September, an exhibition at the Triennale Milano will celebrate the Milanese architect and designer Vico Magistretti, with a vast exhibition that embraces his work in its entirety.
The Triennale is a symbolic place where Magistretti created his first installations, where he was curator, and which celebrates his bond with the city of Milan.

The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Fondazione Vico Magistretti, displays the heritage of drawings, sketches, models, photographs, prototypes, and original pieces conserved in his archive, together with material from the archives of companies, institutions and private collections.
These include the Spiros coat hanger (1987) and the Florian folding table (1989) made by Magistretti for Acerbis.
The idea behind these two products is to transform everyday objects into design objects capable of creating a profound impression with very few elements.
In its wall-mounted version, Spiros is characterized by a central pole in ash wood on which the pegs are fitted in a spiral pattern.
Florian, one of Acerbis’ new products for 2021, rediscovered in the company archives and now part of the Remasters collection, is a multi-level table built on a folding structure inspired by “a broomstick”, which folds completely to be hung on the wall.

The prize, which is awarded each year by the 25 chief editors of Elle Decor’s international network, recognises excellence in the world of interior design in 14 categories, 11 projects and 3 designers.

The creative duo began the process of relaunching the brand by exploring the historical Acerbis archives, creating the first Remasters collection.

Their path takes forward the vision of a design capable of combining functionality and innovation, without neglecting the aesthetics and beauty of some pieces of the great masters who have made the history of design.

The Remasters collection finds its place in the new Acerbis showroom inside the MDF Italia Headquarters in Mariano Comense. The space, designed by the creative duo Quincoces-Meda, art directors of the brand, welcomes the collection presenting the new products in two different areas: living and dining.

Elegance and timeless design characterise the proposal for the living area. The Life sofa by Roberto Monsani is the protagonist thanks to the orange notes of the velvet upholstery and the dark-stained walnut shell; the Menhir low tables create a lively composition through the alternation of the glossy lacquered and walnut wood finishes, the play of the different heights and the marble bases. In the background, the iconic Sheraton sideboard, winner of the Compasso d’Oro in 1979, avant-garde even at its debut, is proposed in the new dark green lacquered version. Finally, the lively Storet by Nanda Vigo, with its soft curves and glossy lacquered fronts, creates a sinuous play of chiaroscuros that enhance its beauty, making it a transversal element in the different areas of the house.

In the dining area, the Maestro table, a masterpiece by architect Gianfranco Frattini, combines design vision and excellence in Italian cabinetmaking savoir-faire. Proposed in the most contemporary version in black ash, it is accompanied by the Jot leather seats by Giotto Stoppino. The proposal is completed by the two Menhir consoles and the Gong coffee tables in new finishes and sizes, perfect for holding decorative objects of various kinds.

The living and dining areas dialogue harmoniously through the choice of sophisticated materials such as wood, leather for the seats, velvet for the sofa, and thanks to a new palette of colours inspired by contemporary, gritty Sixties vintage cars. Two coherent proposals inspired by the needs of contemporary living, but guided by timeless values and design.

In this most unusual year, the 15th annual Best of Year Awards 2020 was held in front of a virtual audience for the very first time.

Hosted by Cindy Allen, Interior Design Magazine’s Editor in Chief, the event was broadcast on December 8th to an audience of designers and architects on Sandow’s Design TV, as well as Interior Design Magazines Facebook Live. Considered the ultimate measure of design excellence, the Best of Year Awards honors the most significant work of 2020 from a plethora of submissions from around the world.

We are very honored to have received the top prize in the Residential Storage category.

Exemplifying the pioneering vision of Milan’s late, great Nanda Vigo, Storet is a spirited, playful pillar of drawers, reissued and updated in 2020 with vibrantly lacquered walnut and brand new proportions. In both its elongated vertical edition and in the lower nightstand – designed by Vigo, but manufactured for the first time this year – the Storet reflects both state-of-the-art advances in production, as well as Acerbis’ extensive wood surfacing expertise, evinced here in sumptuous, visible wood graining. Despite its mono-material construction, Storet offers a buoyant and rewarding choreography of color, texture and form.

Acerbis Presents Sinestesia, a Film by Lorenzo Gironi for the New Collection
Objects possess a life of their own — more than a mere unity of materials, every creation engenders a universe of emotions, history, and the ideas that produced it. Sinestesia, a new film by Lorenzo Gironi for Acerbis, conjures this secret life of objects with delicately rendered sensory perceptions, in which the impact of each design resonates well beyond the ostensibly static furniture before us.

Sinestesia evokes the soul of Acerbis designs, revealing unexpected but visceral accords between objects and the sensations of shapes, colors, and sounds — the metallic chime of pellets ricocheting off of ribbed felt; the inflated airiness of an impossibly ballooning jumpsuit; the linearly-squeezed rigor of an egg bursting through its slicer.
Drawn from the Acerbis archive, each of the designs has been reimagined for the contemporary era by Creative Directors Francesco Meda and David Lopez Quincoces. In capturing the Acerbis pieces, Sinestesia presents the union of their pioneering conception, their enduring modernity, and the impact of the fresh colors, materials, and dimensions of each groundbreaking design.

Sinestesia was entirely shot in 16mm film, and produced manually without any filters or digital effects, to recount the decades-long roots of these visionary designs in the same abstract, intuited language of the pieces themselves, projecting a granular harmony between their past and our forward-looking moment. The creations — icons of their moment conceived by some of the greatest designers of the era — today become ciphers for the ideas and emotions of contemporary living.
